Club History
Clarington Speed Skating Club was formed in 1997. A group of speedskating enthusiasts worked with the Municipality of Clarington who supported the idea. The Ontario Speed Skating Association provided some older skates and the quest for safety mats began. The original 10-20 members worked closely with the Municipality in growing the club. Slowly over the years, through donations and determination, the club has acquired sufficient mats and a vast collection of rental skates.
The first 6 years of skating was held at the Rickard Sports Complex. The Municipality began the planning process of the new South Courtice Arena at which time the club requested and was granted an Olympic sized pad that is standard size for Short Track Speedskating. The Municipality agreed not only to the ice surface but also to provide storage facilities for mats and equipment. The new facility opened in the fall of 2003.
Today, the club is proud to boast a fantastic ice surface to host Meets. Clarington Speed Skating Club has skaters ranging in age from 4 to over 50. In a community where hockey and figure skating are dominant, the club maintains 6 hours of ice time per week.
Earlier this year, Clarington Speed Skating Club hosted the Provincial Championships. The Meet was a resounding success and saw 6 of our skaters reach top 4 positions in the Province. Many Provincial Records were broken on our quick ice.
The Clarington Speed Skating Club is run solely by volunteers. From our Club Executives to our Certified Coaches who dedicate countless hours towards the skaters at practice and numerous races around the province. The Club is also fortunate to have the support of the Municipality of Clarington whose arena staff are excellent in making sure the Club is well serviced at the facility.
The Club offers diverse and affordable programs: Competitive, Recreational, Learn To Speed Skate and Adult Skate.
Personal Bests are always the focus of the Club. We strongly encourage respect and appreciation for fellow skaters, coaches, executives, parents, and all Club members. All of our members are equally important to the Club, from the beginner to the Provincial Champion.
